Dynamite?

I have been thinking about power this week.

A lot of power has been wielded lately. Edicts have been handed out from the White House and state houses. Medical experts have made authoritative pronouncements that have determined what others can and cannot do. Assorted technological platforms have taken over parts of our lives in a fortnight.

Individuals are increasingly resisting that power and exerting their own power. Protesters are protesting. Barbers are barbering. Families and familying.

In every local congregation a million decisions have been made in the last 45 days. Pastors, leaders and congregations are trying to get a handle on things and are taking action to keep congregations open and connected. Crisis is a time for swift and streamlined decision making. Power is exercised.

Power is a good thing. The word of God is described as power. Exertion of power builds buildings, universities and nations.

Power can be a bad thing too. Famously it was said power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

We should beware the exercise of power.

While Jesus instructed his followers about the dangers of sexual temptation and the love of money, he especially warned his followers about the use of power. He explicitly warned them, “You’ve observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. It’s not going to be that way with you.” (Matthew 20:25 MSG) He reproved them when they wanted to call down fire from heaven on those opposed to them. He did not fight fire with fire with Pilate even though he held the power.

I have no idea if it is true that once a dog gets “a taste for blood” it wants more; I do know that getting a taste of power only whets the appetite for more. I have experienced it personally.

Now is a good time to beware the exercise of power– by you, by others.

That seems significant to me this week.

What seems so to you?
