I Hope So

I Hope So

Hope is a fundamental human experience. Hope is central to Christian experience.

I hope so.

You and your family are deciding where to eat dinner. You have one place in mind, your favorite. The kids have another. One of them says, “Let’s flip a coin.” Will you end up going to the place you like best? You say,

“I hope so.” But it all depends on luck. Even if you don’t get to go to your choice, what have you got to lose?  You’ll still get a meal.

I hope so.

It’s basketball tournament time. You are rooting for your team. They played well this year even if at times their performance was spotty. They got a good draw in the tournament. Will they go far? You say,

“I hope so.” There is good evidence for this belief. Past performance is not a bad predictor of a good outcome. But you don’t really know until it happens. You are on the edge of your seat. In the meantime put on the school colors and cheer. If they get bounced early, in the end it won’t really have mattered.

I hope so.

Summer is coming. Winter is giving up its grip. Think sunny thoughts. Think about that cottage. Check out your check book for the entry where you recorded your downpayment. Ahh. Summer vacation in a few months. A friend asks, “Are you going north again this summer?” You say,

“I hope so.” There is a high level of certainty here. It’s not like you will get to your destination and be disappointed that all the hotel rooms are filled. You have a deal. Payment has been made. It’s going to happen. You’re just not there yet.

I hope so.

What is your hope in Jesus?

Is it like a flip of a coin?

Is it like a fan’s expectation?

Is it like a pre-registered guest?

This Lenten Season may you grow by the Spirit in your hope in Jesus.

Jesus: crucified, raised, reigning, returning.

I hope so.

For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Romans 8:24-25
